Laughing In The Mirror

“Because you stuck a bomb inside me.” Maya sighed.
Marina raised a brow, she had not been expecting a conversation. She was simply admiring her servant’s new dress; it looked good on her, after all. Perfect fit, not too dissimilar to something she herself would wear and she didn’t even need to let her borrow one of her own. There was no reason to complain as far as she was concerned, so what was Maya going on about?
“Excuse me?” Marina asked with a tilt of the head. She relaxed comfortably in her armchair next to her favorite bookcase. She would’ve much rather continued her reading, that is the point of a study, of course, yet it seems her servant was bothered with something.
“You keep looking at me. You’re wondering… how did I ever get someone like her to work for me? Why does she listen to anything I have to say? She’s so much better than me in every way, after all I’m nothing more than a pampered twig who couldn’t fight off a raccoon if it tried to rape my ass in my beautiful golden tub.” Maya mocked. “I know, I know… but I’m sure you must have some good qualities.” she shrugged with a smirk.
Marina frowned, her new handmaiden was a bit… disrespectful. And stupid.
“You mock me even though I could kill you whenever I wanted? In such a horrible, gruesome way? How brave you are then.” she grumbled. Maya may have been her twin of sorts but it was only for security’s sake. She had no right to speak to her owner in such a way. Perhaps she needed to have some sense beaten into her. But regardless, Marina had better things to do now. If Maya wanted to run her mouth she could do it while she worked… or on second thought, that might also be disastrous in its own way.
Maya was a body double, nothing more. She was to appear as Marina whenever there was risk of danger and harm... or perhaps even for no good reason at all. If Marina felt tired or unenthusiastic about anything she could just have her glorified dog take her place, that’s what she was for now. Perhaps Maya did need to be taught a lesson in order to ensure her subservience. If only Marina knew...
With a sigh Marina stood up from her chair. She glanced at Maya once again, and though she was as beautiful as she herself… they weren’t the same person. A line needed to be drawn.
“You know, speaking about raping and killing… I saw that happen once.” Maya said, her voice a bit grim though her eyes turned twisted. “Me and some raiders broke into this girl’s house. She was beautiful… elegant, well dressed. She said adorable things with a cute little accent, just like you. She cried with that accent too as we burned her. After we had our fun with her, of course.”
A dark tale, a clear threat. Though unfortunately for Maya… Marina simply burst into a chuckle when she heard it.
Maya stared at her would be mistress; was she… amused by what she had just heard?
“Hey. What’s so damn funny?” she hissed. Marina continued her snickers for a moment longer which did nothing but take the wind out of Maya’s sails. This dumb bitch, Maya thought. Is she really laughing at me?
“I’m sorry...” Marina mumbled as she attempted to subdue herself. “You sounded… so cute saying that. You… I just can’t see you doing something like that.” she snickered.
Maya let out a scoff before crossing her arms.
“You can’t, huh?” she grumbled.
“No!” Marina burst out again. Maya glanced away with an annoyed look on her face, nothing but scorn and derision towards Marina passed through her mind as she was derided as well.
“Well, what can you see me doing then? Cracking your head open against the floor before shoving a book in your new face hole?” Maya grumbled.
“Cleaning my dishes!” Marina cackled.
Maya turned back to look at her… owner. Perhaps she wanted to draw her own line as well, not that she’d have a chance to anytime soon. Or at least it didn’t look like she could but never say never, as they say.
When Marina finally regained some composure she walked up to Maya. Still struggling to keep from laughing again, she simply looked at her twin for a few moments. She thought of her father and how he always handled his problems; perhaps she should’ve paid more attention but… it was too late for that now.
Marina struck Maya across the face… weakly.
“You!” Marina shouted. “Are a bad… dog! Obey me!” she said… before laughing again. Maya had never been so degraded in her entire life, even the dress exposed her more than she would’ve liked. She wanted nothing more than to show Marina the worst pain imaginable but sadly today would not be her chance.
As Maya pulled back her arm with a fire in her eyes, her threat to strike back at Marina was quickly interrupted when the woman stepped away with raised hands.
“Hey, stop now. Stop!” Marina commanded. And just like that, her own personal guard stepped into the room to ensure nothing ever happened to the mobster’s daughter. A very loyal man indeed.
“Watch yourself, Maya.” the man warned; though his presence and appearance were more than enough of a threat to frighten anyone into submission. His charred face and yellowed eyes could incite some terrible dreams in any who saw them. Except her. Maya did not care for she knew all about them by now.
“Oh, screw you too! You think I’m just gonna stand here and get made fun of by this-” Maya tried to say before collapsing onto the ground with a quick shock.
“Yes.” the man assured, his finger firmly on the button of his entertaining new toy. A small bomb in the neck alongside wires with a current running through them. No shock collar, no bomb collar; just threats embedded right into the skin… the laughter was the least of Maya’s degradation. A proud warrior, killer and survivor once. Now a bored woman’s spare corpse.
No wonder they laughed, but Maya was anything but amused. She despised being made to look like a fool, always had. In this world, if you weren’t a hunter… a fiend… you were prey. At least the run down cities might have more order than the wastes beyond. But Maya had not forgotten her upbringing just yet.
